Randy Van Alstine
Since graduating from MHS, where I was Senior Class President, I have helped to plan class reunions for the class of 1962 for it seems like forever. After graduation, I attended Millikin University for one year as a music major, before taking a 10 year educational break during which time I was in Management for JC Penney Company, and served in the US Army during the Vietnam era. I spent my overseas year in Korea. During this ten year period I also entertained for a year on the road with a rock band called The Scarlets who were booked out of Philadelphia. I guess this was my time to try to find myself. Upon returning to complete my education at 27 years of age, I attended Rochester Community College in Rochester, Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis graduating in 1975. I then completed my doctoral at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1978.
I returned to Decatur and practiced dentistry from 1979-2007. During those years I served on many Boards and volunteered for various fundraising endeavors. I served on the Decatur City Council from 1990-1994 and ran unsuccessfully for Mayor in 1994. At this time I had two passions in addition to dentistry. I continued my love of playing in rock bands with Rock of Ages and later formed Soul Purpose which was popular in the Decatur area for almost 15 years. In addition, I was President of the Decatur Softball Booster Club which sponsored the world-class fastpitch softball team, Decatur Pride, for nearly 16 years. I was inducted into the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 2016 for meritorious service in the promotion of fastpitch softball.
I retired in 2007 and moved to Naples Florida which had become our second home. Later we moved to Bonita Springs which is still our home today. My retirement years have never been dull since I reignited my passion for music for a few years with a 7-piece band called Sound Check. I continue to entertain professionally with a female partner as a duo called The Classics II. I could not avoid the tendency for leadership positions serving as President of my HOA in Naples for nine years and as Secretary and Treasurer for my HOA in Bonita Springs for the past three years.
I have managed to stay healthy aided by my love of the game of tennis. I played tournaments in my early years and later when I returned to college I played on my Junior College team, winning the Minnesota Junior College State Tournament at number 5 singles and number 3 doubles in 1974. I continue to be an avid player and promoter of the game.
After some false starts, I have been happily married to Mary Williams Van Alstine for 25 years. (not our Mary Williams!) We have had many wonderful years of trips and cruises together. I should have met her 20 years sooner. We especially love spending time with son Jason and his wife Tracy and their boys Will, Ben, Alex and Wes.
I became a dedicated Christian about 20 years ago and I work every day to try to be the kind of Christian that will be accepted in heaven. I run the sound system for the praise band at Anchor Christian Church in Bonita Springs, where we have attended for the past five years.
I still believe that we were fortunate to have grown up in the sixties. I have such great memories of growing up with you all and sharing our high school experiences. It was a special time.
